Penrose, Charles Bingham (1862–1925), American gynecologist. Penrose founded the Gynecean Hospital of Philadelphia in 1887, and until 1899 he served as the hospital's chief surgeon. During the same period he was professor of gynecology at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School and gynecologist at the university hospital. He wrote a textbook on the diseases of women, and in 1890 he published a paper on abdominal surgery in which he introduced the Penrose drain.
